Tuesday Ladies Team Play;
Congratulations are once again in order for our Ladies.  Way to go Team Captain Cathy Giordano and the rest of her support staff.  Our Ladies Team has made the playoffs for the 3rd year in a row.  This year they qualified for the Gross Division of the Playoffs and will take on the team from Industry Hills.  Due to the scheduling of the Member Guest they will be competing across the street at TPC.  Thank you to all of you that are multi Members or just have helped cement that great relationship with them.  It is extremely generous of them to host us this week.  Please in your travels make sure that they are thanked.  Ladies, it is going to be awesome when you beat up on those ladies from Industry Hills.  Good luck and GO TEAM!!

Wednesday Night Match Play;
There is no Wednesday Night Match Play this week.

the Classic Member Guest;
The Classic is upon us.  Thank you to all of the Handicap and Tournament Committee Members for their support in organizing this event.  Valencia Country Club will be open to participants only Thursday thru Saturday for this annual event.  There have been a couple of tee time and flight changes since the original times were posted.  On my blog (address at the bottom of the page) is a link to an updated version of the Tee Times.  Just copy and past the link to your address bar at the top of your internet browser.  I look forward to seeing you this week for tons of fun!

The Weekend Release

Craig’s Weekend Release Program
For the week of June 7th thru June 12th

Ladies Club Championship;
We had a great weekend of golf at Valencia Country Club with our gals playing their Club Championship.  The overall Championship was competed over 54 holes, three days of golf.  The Net Championship was competed on Saturday and Sunday over 36 holes.  Friday started the action with 3 of the ladies shooting in the 80’s with Mel Johnson firing a “Zoned Out” 82.  Saturday otherwise known as moving day saw perennial contender and ’09 Champ Debbie Clement get back into the mix.  The steady play of Yasmin Merali had given us a leader after day 2 with steady rounds in the 80’s.  In the Net world, Tammy Becker stepped out to a lead with a 74, she was one of 4 ladies to give us rounds in the 70’s.  As of Sunday morning nothing was decided.  5 ladies fired rounds in the 80’s in the Gross Division.  This barrage of 80’s was lead by last years Champion Brenda Chaplin, Nicole Chase, Meg Okura our Runner up, Debbie Clement and our most consistent player of the weekend and Champion Yasmin Merali!  In the Net Division 3 of the 4 players in the final group broke 80.  Little did they know that Elize Theron was going to shoot a 69 and take a strangle hold on the Net Championship followed by Second Place finisher Rhonda Pieracci.  Just 2 back of Rhonda was first time participant Jackie Hamby.  Thank you all for participating, it was a great time!!

Tuesday Ladies Team Play;
The Ladies are looking to repeat and make the playoffs this year.  It is looking like our Ladies will be playing in the Gross Division of the playoffs, which will be a first for us.  We are typically the team to beat in the Net world.  Way to go Ladies.  This week our Ladies travel to Stockdale Country Club to battle on temporary greens and bunkers that are ground under repair.  We will know exactly where we stand after this match Tuesday.  Good luck and Go Team!!!

Wednesday Night Match Play;
We won’t be playing next week due to “the Classic,” so this is our last match before a bit of a break.  This week’s format will be a Modified Pinehurst, thanks to John Gedney for helping us get this definition right.  Regis, you might lose your spot as the Club editor.  In the Modified Pinehurst each player tees off then you take the best shot and play alternate shot in from there.  There is only one shot before you pick up the other ball and only have one in play.  Coming into this week it looks like the top 4 teams are solidifying their spots in the playoffs.  The action in in the 5th spot with Team Steve Spiker, Team Greg Spencer and Team Lou Gonzales all tied at 103 only 4 points away from that coveted 4th place held by Team Regis Malone.

The President’s Cup;
It looks like we are finally to the Flight Championships...well all but one flight is to it’s Championship.  In the President’s Flight, the Championship will be competed between Harry Thomas and Gary Chiurazzi.  The Vice President’s Flight final is between Scott Krivis and Doug Schiermeyer.  The naughty flight is the Treasurer’s Flight.  We are in the Semi-Final’s of this flight.  Both matches will be played on Thursday.  On one side of the bracket we have Steve Marks playing James Song and the other side of the bracket has Art Johnson and Russ Hoffman.  The Secretary’s Flight will be Will Whitehead taking on Pablo Suarez.  Thanks for getting all of these matches played.  I know that scheduling can be tough!

the Classic Member Guest;
The course will be closed for the Classic on June 16th, 17th and 18th.  We are finalizing our field this week.  Thank you all for getting your guests to us as the list of players will be going to print early this week.

The Weekend Release

Craig’s Weekend Release Program
For the week of May 24th thru May 30th

The Classic Member Guest;
The Classic Member Guest is typically the most popular event we do here at Valencia Country Club.  This year sign ups seem to be a bit slower than usual which to me is surprising especially with the added incentive of having the winners participate in the BMW Invitational at Pinehurst.  If you are on the fence of participating and need selling, just call me or any one of the other Members that have played in this event.   Just by playing you will receive over $300 a team in tee prizes.  We really do need a firm number so we can make sure we have the right amount of prizes.  Please finalize your plans for Father’s Day weekend and spend Thursday thru Saturday with us at Valencia Country Club’s premier event.

Tuesday Ladies Team Play;
Well, the Ladies are continuing their solid play in Team Play.  This past week they hosted Crystalaire Country Club on a brisk day at VCC.  They won both Gross and Net against them.  They then traveled to Bakersfield Country Club Thursday and tied Gross and lost Net and stay undefeated in the Gross.  This Tuesday they host Bakersfield and will exact their revenge.  Tuesday will be a 9:00 shotgun for the Ladies.  They then travel to Antelope Valley on Thursday.  By the end of the week our picture will be very clear where they stand.

Wednesday Night Match Play;
Last week seemed to be the week a couple of teams made their move half way through the season.  Team Rick Smith dominated a depleted Chris Chase Team.  The final score of that match was 20.5 to 1.5.  Team Regis Malone also made a strong move scoring 18.5 points against Team Dean Herrington who earned 3.5 points in the match.  All the match standings are posted on the website.  Please get your players into us earlier than later.

Memorial Day;
Memorial Day weekend is upon us.  We are open next Monday and will be taking tee times starting Tuesday for Monday.  Please come by this weekend as we will be kicking off summer with a BBQ on the patio all weekend long!

Weekday Junior Programs;
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday we have programs scheduled for the Valencia Country Club Juniors.  Tuesday is for the age groups 4-7, Wednesday is for age groups 8-12 and Thursday is for those children that are ready to get out on the golf course with the Pros.  All of these programs are great opportunities for the Juniors to get to know each other and build friendships for life.

Summer Weekend Times;
Starting this Sunday we will move to our Summer Starting Times.  The first time on Sunday the 22nd will be 6:33 so all you early risers or those of you that come straight to the course after the bars close, come on out and we will be ready for you!

Schedule of events for the week of May 24th thru May 30th:

Tuesday:  Ladies Day 8:00 Team Play vs Bakersfield CC at 9:00, tee closed until 10:00ish; LTAD ages 4-7 3:30-4:30
Wednesday:  Open Play; LTAD ages 8-12 3:30-4:30; Wednesday Match Play 4:30 ShotGun

Monday:  Tee Times all day, no Guest Play Limitations

The Weekend Release

Craig’s Weekend Release Program
For the week of May 10th thru May 15th

Play Pinehurst for Free this Fall!;
“the Classic” Invitations went out last week and we would really like to have them in by this Sunday so we can get tee prizes organized.  This year’s overall Net Champion will qualify for the BMW Golf Cup International at Pinehurst Resort.  All expenses will be paid except for travel to this event.  If you and your partner win “the Classic” you will participate at Pinehurst on September 29-October 2, 2011.  I hope you enjoy this added bonus of winning “the Classic.”  If you haven’t received your invitation by mail, please come by the shop as we do have a few extras behind the counter.

The Modified Chapman;
This weekend we have our Men’s Modified Chapman event.  This and the Grupp Cup are two of our most popular events.  The Modified Chapman format is tons of fun.  Both players tee off, you switch shots and play the others tee shot and then hit and then you alternate shots the rest of the way into the hole.  It really is a great format.  We will tee this event off at 9:00.  Please call the shop or sign up in the locker room if you are interested in playing.

Wednesday Night Match Play;
This weeks format is a Shamble.  Both players will tee off and you will pick the best drive and play your own ball in from there.  Please get us your list of players as early as possible.  If you are on the team, please come in the shop to tell us you are here and try to be here before 4:35 as we try to tee this off by 4:30.

Henry Mayo Golf Tournament;
Just a little FYI, the Henry Mayo Golf Tournament is quickly approaching.  The course will be closed all day on Saturday the 21st.

Memorial Day;
As Memorial Day weekend approaches, i just want to give you a heads up.  We will be taking tee times for the Monday.  There will be no guest play restrictions and we will start taking tee times on Tuesday the 24th for that following Memorial Day weekend.

Weekday Junior Programs;

Aerification;
This should be our last week of fairway and tee aerification.  Aerification is basically a venting for the grass’ root system.  We aerify in this transition time in order to encourage our base grass, bermuda.  As most of you know from high school that this is what is happening as grass grows
    2n CO2 + 2n H2O + photons → 2(CH2O)n + 2n O2
As we wrap up aerification you will see some holes in the tees and fairways.  If your ball should come to rest in one of the holes you may lift clean and place it as near to the spot as possible.  We also will be teeing off the back nine a bunch this week, so we can finish the front nine.  Thanks for your patience as we get this course ready for the summer months.

Schedule of events for the week of May 10th thru May 15th:

Tuesday:  Ladies Day 8:00; LTAD ages 4-7 3:30-4:30
Wednesday:  Open Play; LTAD ages 8-12 3:30-4:30; Wednesday Match Play 4:30 ShotGun
Thursday:  Open Play; Juniors Playing with the Pro 3:30
Friday:  Tee Times all day
Saturday: Men’s Modified Chapman 9:00;  The Course will open after play
Sunday: Members only before 11:00;  Tee Times after 11:00

The Weekend Release

Craig’s Weekend Release Program
For the week of May 3rd thru May 8th

Men’s Club Championship;
Once again the Santa Clarita Valley rivals Mars as the most inhospitable conditions in the known universe.  I am really starting to wonder why the founders of this area stopped here.  I am starting to think they stopped here to wait out the storm and haven’t left!  I am worried about the sanity of all of us that call this place home.  We competed our Club Championship among winds that turned trees into toothpicks and sent branches javelining through the air.  I honestly found myself in the midst of a discussion about what was better to live through, and earthquake or tornado\hurricane.  When that becomes the standard of living, something isn’t right.  Lest i digress, we did have a Club Championship this weekend.  After our first day of wind we saw Peter Cho and Dean Herrington leading the event.  Going into Saturday morning, Chris Chase and Dave Fish finished out the lead group.  Saturday showed us a little more mild weather, the wind only gusted to 30 mph.  After Saturday’s rounds the final group in the Gross Division was Forrest Blake, Gary Chiurazzi, Joe Millin and Armando Rand.  In the Net Division there were only 3 rounds of par or better which were brought to us by John Gedney, Michael Keefe, and Akihiro Komine.  Sunday found us with much better weather, but the course had dried out and the greens showed their teeth.  In the final round of the Net Division Bill Rose came from behind finishing at 1 under for the event and captured this year’s Championship followed by Ed Aguilar and John Gedney.  The Gross Division was truly a battle of attrition.  Forrest Blake made a 3 footer on 18 to hold off Eric Findon and Dean Herrington who both had low rounds on Sunday.  Thank you to all who came out and participated this weekend.  Photos and results will be posted on the website and blog.

Japanese Tsunami Fundraiser;
This is your final week to sign up for the Japanese Fundraiser.  Thank you to all that have signed up and to those of you that have sponsored your services to make this event very special!

The Classic Member Guest;
Well gentlemen, the invitations for “the Classic” went out on Saturday.  “the Classic” is our biggest annual event here at Valencia Country Club.  It is the 16th thru the 18th of June, Father’s Day weekend.  We will be receiving sign-ups until the 15th of May.  There will be a very special prize for the Net Champions this year.  Please make sure that you get your invitations in to us as this event will fill up.  If you don’t receive and invitation in the mail over the next couple of days, please stop by the shop and grab one.  We do have a few extras.

Weekday Junior Programs;

Multi-Club Demo Day;
As many of you may have seen we will be having a massive, enormous, vast, great, colossal, mammoth, jumbo, astronomical, elephantine, monumental, prodigious, gigantic, monstrous, immense, ginormous...big Demo Day on Saturday.  All of your favorites Golf Club Companies will be here.  It will be open to the public so come early if you are in the market for some new equipment.
